Sales Tips On Becoming A Salesman

A few days ago one of my associates asked me how I became a salesman…

 

To be quite honest I was caught off guard and it took me a few minutes of conjuring up past memories to structure the sequence of events that led me to that visit with that associate and I began to explain the success and failures in my career and life to him.

That afternoon I realized that I had something to share with everyone and I decided to write about it.

Becoming a salesman is a thrilling, boring, stressful, career choice that can be rewarding or disappointing. The reason I describe this career choice this way is because of the fact that YOU make it what you want it to be. Most people picture “a used car salesman” the minute you tell them that you are in the sales field and that is a pity. I`ve met quite a few car salesmen that are very successful, not because they lie, but because they listen to their customers and recommend only what they inform they want or need. Sales is about listening to the needs of a person or organization in order to identify any problems they might be having and providing a solution that benefits both parties at hand. The sales department of any organization is the lifeblood on which the company`s heartbeat runs on. The organization can have the best product in the world, but if they don`t have anyone to communicate to the outside world on why the product is so great, there would be no sales to sustain the existence of the company.

If you are contemplating on becoming a salesman the first thing I am going to tell you is that you need to keep an open mind and always be willing to learn. Think about it…you have been selling from day one of your life. Don`t believe me? How many times have you experienced babies crying? All babies cry due to the inability of being able to speak, but somehow a mother knows that they are either hungry or need to be changed. The mother has the ability to rush over and check the baby`s diaper or plug a bottle in it`s mouth that identifies the emotional response to sooth the uncomfortable baby. As we get older and learn to communicate through pointing and then eventually begin to speak to identify specific needs that a growing child wants or needs. This is much like a brand new salesman that has entered into an unknown world and needs to keep an open mind and be willing to learn as he grows into his career as a professional problem solver.

The first step in finding the right sales position for you is to evaluate yourself and find out what most interests you. I know this career track can be quite lucrative, but if you focus on money more than what you love to do, you will struggle on becoming a respected solution provider. If you are very knowledgeable about the products or services you will sell…the money will be chasing you and not the other way around.

The second step is to decide whether you want a straight commission or salary sales position. If you can afford a straight salary commission always set aside money for your slow times and you will have slow times. A good rule to follow is to have at least 3 to 6 months worth set aside. The stress of not having reserves will affect the way you make decisions when you are providing solutions to your customers and these “decisions” are usually bad.

The third step is to evaluate the products and the companies who make them. You do not want to sell products that would hurt your credibility. You have to truly believe in the products you are selling and be able to show the features, advantages, and benefits. Make sure the company you want to work for treats their employees well by researching them online for employee reviews. Keep in mind that there are going to be bitter former employees and you have to be able to interpret the overall reviews for yourself.

The fourth step is to research the Internet for books to read on sales. There are countless reviews on the Internet on so many books that it would be hard to list them here in this post.

The fifth step is to simply talk to a sales representative for the company you are interested in to get a feel for what it is like to work for that company.

Remember that all salespeople are not bad and the good ones are all ears.
